I love polka dots. Seriously. If it has polka dots, I will more than likely purchase it.
I think it's heredity. My mom likes polka dots too.
I came home from work the other night and it was cold and wet and yucky and thin, silky pajamas just weren't going to warm me up, so I pulled out a light blue polka dot pair lined with flannel. Admired them for a few minutes. Then put them on. And they made me mull over all the polka dot fashions I own. I have 2 3 5 7 polka dot dresses. Green, brown, red, black with white, white with black...why, yes. I have a white dress with black polka dots AND a black dress with white polka dots. What's your point?
I actually have two pairs of polka dot strappy sandals also. One black and white and one rose and white. I haven't worn the rose and white ones yet but when I find the perfect thing to wear them with, I will have them. This is what is known as a back-up fashion plan.
So, I put on my sweet polka dot pajamas. I tidied the kitchen. It was too late for a dinner that required a lot of work, plus I had my nails done ( TECHNICALLY the reason I was late) and they were PERFECT, so I made cheesy scrambled eggs and hot buttered toast. And we settled in to watch "Gilmore Girls". Season 3.
I curled up in my chair and admired my polka dots. And they were absolutely perfect.

"...I Should Do Something, But I'm Already In My Pajamas."
Flash Back Friday
The above quote is from Futurama, which I must confess I have never seen, although the premise is intriguing. I just liked the quote. Because I am seriously a pajama lover. I don't know how many pairs I have and I'm not going to count them because, after telling you how many shoes I bought just recently, I don't want you to judge me. But I have a lot. And I love them all. I don't like cotton pajamas or flannel pajamas, I only like silky, silky, silky pajamas. They feel so nice against my skin. I have been known to put on pajamas at three o'clock in the afternoon when I get home from school. They are just so lovely and comfy.
I have always loved pajamas and pretty lingerie. When I was in high school, I had a really cute short nightie with matching bloomer panties that were red and white striped. One morning, I stumbled out of bed and decided I was way too sleepy to take a shower. Luckily, with long hair, you can get away with a decision like that and just swoop it up into a pony tail. I threw on some clothes, slapped on some make-up, grabbed some toast and ran out to the school bus.
I made it through my first couple of classes without falling asleep and headed to the girl's restroom right before lunch.
I entered the stall, flipped up my little mini-skirt and realized. I still had on my red and white striped bloomers under my skirt. I was horrified. I flipped my skirt down again to make sure they didn't show. They didn't but they definitely showed when I bent over. I tried to think back and remember whether I had bent over all morning. How absurd to think that someone could have seen those bright red and white striped bloomers under my skirt! I didn't think I had bent over. I left them on (really, what else could I do?) and made a conscious effort not to bend over all day.
Nobody ever knew I had them on. Until now. But I know you can keep a secret.
That's why I tell you so many.

Sleepwear at Walmart
Did y'all get the memo that it's now OK to wear your slippers to Walmart? You didn't? Hmm. Neither did I. But, apparently, SEVERAL other people got that memo. Every time I go to Walmart, I see some lady (I use this term loosely) with her bedroom slippers on. Now, these are not, like, slides or thongs, that you could get away with wearing as slippers at home. No, I'm talking about fuzzy slippers that can not be mistaken for anything else. It doesn't seem to matter what season it is, either. I have seen them worn in high, hot summer and icy cold winter. Saw some just the other day.
What's next? Will it become OK to wear your pajamas to the mall? (On second thought, maybe that's not a bad idea. I do love pajamas. OK, get a grip.) Your underwear to the grocery store?
This is an issue that bothers me. It does not bother my husband. He is just waiting for me to tell him it's OK for him to wear his sleeping pants and gray t-shirt when we go out to eat. And that reminds me of another dressing down or barely dressing issue.
What happened to dressing up to go out? To go to the movies, to a restaurant, to the mall, to travel? I'm not talking about jeans. Everyone wears jeans now. I wear jeans now. Although, I do think wearing jeans to a Broadway show is a little tacky, as we witnessed in New York. But there are jeans and there are jeans. There are clean, nicely fitting jeans worn with a pretty top or sweater and cute boots or slides, depending on the season. Then there are dirty jeans that some guy wore to work at the construction site, then sashayed on into O'Charley's to grab a bite to eat. Possibly some road-kill possum.
Do people even put any thought into this? When I go out, I take a shower, do my hair, put on makeup and dress in the outfit I have selected. Apparently, this is just WAY too much effort for some people.
I have seen people at the movies in sloppy sweatpants and a too-big t-shirt and dirty thong sandals. Did you LOOK in the mirror before you left home? You are not watching a move on the DVD player in your living room, you know.
And don't even get me started on how people look when they are travelling now. My mama taught me you always look presentable when you are travelling. You wear something nice that matches. You do not wear torn blue jean shorts. You do not wear old sandals that show your dirty feet. You do not carry your clothes in a brown paper grocery bag. (OK, I haven't actually seen that, but it wouldn't surprise me.)
Maybe it's my age. Maybe everyone dresses more casually now. But I know that's not really it. My daughter and my nieces always dress nicely, even when they are dressing casually. I don't know what it is.
Do you?
